A Little Bit About Canada
Thoughts From My Delegation About This Trip
Thank Yous

I had to do a lot of things to prepare myself before going to Canada...

It was near the end of August when I got that life changing letter.  It said that I was invited to join the People to People Student Ambassador Program.  It also said that I had to go to an information meeting and from there I had to be interviewed so that they could be sure that I was the type of person they wanted to be a student ambassador.  I was then accepted after being interviewed!  Next, I started to go to meetings once a month to learn more about Canada, the People to People Student Ambassador Program, and have a chance to meet all the other students going- preparing me for my big trip.  After every meeting I would have homework and it would all go in my journal.  While doing that, I had raise all my tuition so that I would be able to go to Canada.  Then, of course, I had to pack my bags and get ready to leave home for two weeks!

Merging With the Maryland Delegation

Six other kids and I were chosen out of the Tidewater Area Delegation to join the Maryland Delegation.  The reason? There were too many kids in the Tidewater Delegation and not enough kids in the Maryland Delegation.  When I heard about this, I was disappointed at first because I had met some really nice kids, but then I realized that this was a good thing because I would get to meet more kids!  Also, now the six other kids and I could have our own individual meetings at each other's houses, we could go camping together with it being just us, we could work on our community service project with it being just us, and we got to have our Bon Voyage Party at one of the other kids' houses who had a pool!  Plus, we got to go to Maryland to the other delegation's Bon Voyage Party to see who we would be traveling with.  Also, we saw the Tidewater Area delegation in Canada one time, so it all worked out pretty good!

Fundraising

Here's a list of some of the ways I earned my tuition:

  • I wrote letters to all of my relatives asking if they could make a donation to me.
  • I went around to businesses and organizations asking if they would like to help sponsor me.
  • I wrote letters to everyone who worked at the schools in my county.
  • I had a lot of bake sales at church.
  • I had a spaghetti dinner/silent auction/bake sale.
  • I sold raffle tickets for $5.00 with some other kids in my area who were in the People to People Student Ambassador Program.  I had my friends help me sell tickets, too.  I also got to keep $4.00 of the $5.00 with the tickets I sold if (as a whole) we sold enough tickets, which we did.  First prize was $500 shopping card at Wal-Mart, Second prize was $200 shopping card at Farm Fresh, and third prize was a $100 shopping card at Lowe's. This is what provided me most of my tuition.

When I finished all of my fundraising, I had earned enough money for my tuition, my spending money for Canada, and I now have some money in a savings account for the next time I would like to travel with People to People.  It was hard work, but in the end it was worth it.
